Group Name: Applegrove Community Complex – Over the Rainbow Therapeutic Play

Description: Applegrove Community Complex is a multi-service community organization in southeast Riverdale in Toronto. Our catchment area runs from Jones to Woodbine Avenues and from Lake Ontario north to the Railway tracks. Services cover the age range with programs for infants, children, teens, adults and seniors.

Over The Rainbow is a therapeutic play group for young children who are experiencing behavioural and/or emotional difficulties in their interactions with other children or their parents. The program consists of 8 weekly sessions for children and parents. Children use music, art, drama and story-telling to explore feelings, experiences and behaviours, while parents discuss concerns in a supportive group environment.

All children can have difficulties adjusting their emotional states to different life situations and as a result may be moody or have trouble listening, waiting, and/or making changes in routine. There can also be difficult social times when children learn to play and interact with other children. However, this group is designed for children who are having more difficulty than others and whose parents worry about the children’s social and emotional health.
