Group Name: Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic – Open Expressive Arts Group

Description: The Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic is a specialized clinic for women experiencing violence. The clinic offers legal help in family, immigration and criminal law, compassionate support from diverse, skilled counsellors, and interpretation and translation in more than 90 languages. It advocates for law reform and social changes that benefit women. The Clinic also provides professional development opportunities for service providers. Language interpreters are available in over 60 languages for non-English women.

When you feel isolated and alone it is helpful to share your experiences with other women who have gone through similar problems. You do not need any previous group or art experience. If you can draw a stick figure you can do this group. The visual arts are used as a way to communicate experiences and create strategies to address needs. Some topics covered include:

  • different ways of coping with stress
  • ways to create safety
  • exploring what arises for us when we experience conflict
  • how to take better care of ourselves
  • community resources

Space is limited so women must register prior to attending the group. For more information and/or to register, please call Intake. There is a phone interview to be done by the facilitator and a waiting list for this group. Limited child care is available. TTC tokens are available for those in need. Suzanne Thomson, an art therapist, leads all group sessions.
