Group Name: The 519 Church Street Community Centre – Newcomer Youth Engagement
Description: The 519 is the hub of community life in Toronto’s diverse Church and Wellesley Village. For over 35 years, The 519 has been working with our neighbours and our lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer (LGBTQ) communities to build healthy, welcoming spaces to meet, participate and celebrate together. With the support of our staff team, our communities identify and implement solutions to emerging issues through award-winning programs and services, and with the leadership of volunteers, over 80 community-led programs provide peer support, social, recreational, arts and cultural opportunities in our public meeting spaces.
Youth Engagement is a weekly program for newcomer youth (aged 14-19) who are Permanent Residents or Convention Refugees, residing in Canada for less than 5 years. Youth Engagement is a great way to make new friends, practice English, and build skills around leadership, volunteerism, and goal setting. Each week offers a workshop exploring topics that will help you learn more about your new home, Canada.
2012-2013 program highlights have included:
- Get Connected – An Anti-Poverty Initiative: an eye-opening look at nutrition, food, and poverty in Canada
- Tips from the Pros –an insider’s view of non-traditional careers in Canada, e.g. DJing, architecture, and culinary arts
- Cooking Around The World- exploring nutrition and food through recipes from around the world
- Positive Spaces – Learning about Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Queer (LGBTQ) communities and create spaces free from oppression
