Group Name: Iranian Canadian Youth Organization – After School Programs
Description: In light of some incidents that took place in 2003 in which some youth of the Canadian Iranian community who were involved in organised gang and drug activities were found dead, a group of concerned community members from different backgrounds and expertise such as social work, education, and business, gathered to prevent any similar future occurrences. That was the birth of the Iranian Canadian Support Group (IC Youth Organization) as a not-for-profit community based organization in 2003. After several years of service and support from the community, the organization formally registered as a not-for-profit organization in Ontario, adapted the new name IC Youth Organization to reflect its broader scope for service delivery.
The after-school program is designed for newcomer youth between the ages of 16 to 19 living in Toronto and York Region. The after-school program is intended to create a safe and stimulating space to improve the academic and social success of newcomer and at-risk youth. The main purpose of the program is to support young people to engage in positive activities (sports and arts) that build self-esteem and self-confidence, increase social connections, improve academic success through tutoring and mentoring, and provide referral information as necessary. In addition, the program supports youth and their families through the process of resettlement.
