Stroke Prevention Booth at Six
Nations Diabetes Conference:
A Health Ambassador ran an information booth on foot care and
stroke prevention at a two-day conference for First Nations
people with diabetes, and those at risk for it. The conference
focused on the need for healthy lifestyle (diet, exercise, etc.)
to avoid diabetes, to manage it, and to prevent many of the
complications it can cause – including strokes and heart
attacks.
As
part of the message of healthy choices, the ambassador used
her budget and enlisted some volunteers to buy, prepare and
offer trays of fruit and vegetable snacks to the conference
attendees. She also created a display and offered literature
on stroke and stroke prevention.
"There
was a lot of interest, a lot of questions, and the fresh fruit
and veggie snacks went VERY fast."
"A
lot of people did not know about the connection between diabetes
and stroke."
