Child Development Institute – Transitioning Support

Group Name: Child Development Institute – Transitioning Support

Description: Child Development Institute (CDI) is an accredited children’s mental health agency, providing a range of programs and services for children 0 – 12 and their families. They offer evidence-based programs across three streams: Early Intervention Services, Family Violence Services and Healthy Child Development. Their approach is family-focused and we work with each child and family’s unique strengths, needs and challenges. They help them to uncover their abilities, give them tools to succeed, and support them in overcoming challenges.

Transitions is a drop-in group program to support women and children who have experienced family violence or other trauma, and are currently in crisis or transition. The drop-in group is run weekly and provides mothers with the opportunity to get support, resources and referrals as issues arise. Children attend a separate group where they learn stress management and safety planning techniques, as well as coping strategies and social skills. Transitions supports families during times of crisis and change.

Opportunity For Advancement – Preparing for Change

Group Name: Opportunity For Advancement (OFA) – Preparing for Change

Description: OFA has been developing and offering innovative groups for socially and economically disadvantaged women for over 30 years. We have been part of proudly supporting thousands of women to help themselves gain confidence, self-respect and move towards economic independence.
Opportunity For Advancement (OFA) works with women in disadvantaged life situations. While poverty is an issue for almost all the women, other factors create additional barriers to well-being and equal participation in society.

The Preparing For Change program is about assessing our own lives and integrating and balancing this with effective support and skill that will help resolve the issues leading to unhappiness. Some of us come to a point in our lives where we know we can go no further yet we do not know how to identify the steps necessary to lead to eventual change. The best way to predict the future is to create it ourselves. Preparing For Change is a program focusing on taking control of our lives and creating our own futures through finding the power within each of us. The program uses the strength of a supportive group setting to help participants identify problems and to take action. It is about sharing information and developing new skills, forming new friendships and developing new ways of seeing the totality of events that have helped to shape who we are as individuals. It is about helping women make changes.

This seven week program meets in communities across Toronto. Information sharing, group support, and confidence building are used to help women of all ages set realistic goals which enable them to go on to educational upgrading, training, and active involvement in their community program.
