Midaynta Community Services – Gambling and Addictions

Description: Midaynta Community Services is a registered Canadian charity organization that provides settlement services and other programs that advances education by providing courses, seminars, meetings, counseling and other support services for refugees & immigrant in need. Midaynta Community Services is a social and settlement services agency, working to improve the quality of life of newcomers in Toronto and vicinity.

Gambling and Addictions
Midaynta has been invited to conduct a comprehensive research project on Gambling and Problem Gambling within the Toronto Somali community. This study was completed in February 2003 and its findings are now available on-line. Based on the findings of this study, we are currently working with COSTI and CAMH to provide culturally appropriate preventive, educational, intervention, and treatment programs for problem gamblers in the community. We provide services in the areas of:

  • Individual counselling
  • Group/family counselling
  • Referral to professional services
  • Prevention, education, and treatment of problem gambling

Description: The Arab Community Centre of Toronto (ACCT) is a non for profit organization with charitable status, and is non-political and non-sectarian. The ACCT is proud to be a focal point for all Arab and non-Arab communities in which they can find an outlet for settlement and social services inquiries. We serve newcomers of all cultures, religions and ethnicities.

Problem Gambling is an urge to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. Problem gambling is not just about losing money, it has a negative impact on person’s life. It can affect health, school or work performance, financial and/or interpersonal relationships.

The Arab Community Center of Toronto is currently providing professional and confidential services on Problem Gambling. The services include culturally appropriate prevention, education and treatment for gambling and family members in the Arab Community. Our prevention services include outreach and public education activities directed towards various Arabian groups. We provide services to individuals, couples, family and group counseling for people with problem gambling or those affected. The ACCT during the past year helped more than 20 clients to control over their addiction.

COSTI Immigrant Services – Problem Gambling Services

Description: Meeting the needs of a diverse society since 1952, COSTI Immigrant Services is a community-based multicultural agency providing employment, educational, settlement and social services to all immigrant communities, new Canadians and individuals in need of assistance. COSTI strives to be a leader in community service by using a client focused, proactive, and innovative approach in planning, developing and delivering services. Our programs ensure that regardless of language or cultural barriers, people who arrive in Canada are able to use their existing skills, learn new ones, and participate actively in all aspects of Canadian life.

The services offered through COSTI’s Problem Gambling Service includes culturally and linguistically appropriate prevention, education, and treatment for gamblers and family members in the Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish Canadian community, as well as outreach and public education prevention activities directed towards various ethno-cultural communities. The program works collaboratively with ethno-specific agencies and the Canadian Association for Mental Health Services to deliver prevention activities in the various ethno-cultural communities. The treatment service is client centered and easy to access for the Italian Canadian community. COSTI’s Problem Gambling Service, uses a model of intervention that is culturally based and linguistically appropriate, incorporating a harm reduction approach, and motivational, cognitive, behavioural and solution focused counselling.

****There is no cost for this program. Services are available to all Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish Canadians residing in Toronto and York Region. Staff at this location speak English, Italian and Spanish.

Description: Since its founding, the Centre has evolved and grown to become a leading community-based substance abuse and problem gambling agency for women in Ontario. The Centre offers a wide range of services including residential and day programming; two day programs now exist – one 3 weeks and one 7 weeks for mothers with young children. They also offer out-patient programs including family and trauma counseling, and outreach services in various locations across the city for pregnant and parenting women. Most recently, they have added a second outreach service to women who have mental health and substance use problems as well as involvement in the criminal justice system.

The Jean Tweed Centre provides a range of programs for women with problem gambling concerns. This includes our core programs such as Support and Stabilization, the 3 week Day or Residential programs, the Individualized Counselling Program, Continuing Care and the Trauma program. We also have a Problem Gambling Support Group open to any woman with a gambling concern. This weekly group provides a friendly, comfortable environment for talking about a range of gambling related issues. Description: The Ontario Problem Gambling Helpline provides information about problem gambling services in Ontario. Their service is live answer 24/7, confidential through telephone, web chat and e-mail. There is no cost to access these services.

They can:

  • listen, offer support and provide strategies to help you meet your goals

Living with the issues of substance abuse and/or gambling can be lonely and overwhelming for families/friends. They also play a vital role in supporting women to make changes in their life. Whether it’s dealing with the personal impact or figuring out how to help a loved one, families and friends require support and assistance. At Jean Tweed we offer an open support group for families/friends. New members are invited to arrive at 5:30 to meet the family counselor and other new members. Each night we’ll talk about a different area of interest; some topics include:

  • Understanding substance use/gambling and their impact on families
  • Taking care of yourself when someone you care about has a problem
  • Finding and using support
  • Staying safe and handling crises
  • Acknowledging what has been lost
  • Effective communication
  • Setting limits
  • Finding hope again

Description: am-Anon is a 12 Step self-help fellowship of men and women who have been affected by the gambling problem of a loved one. They understand as perhaps few can. Description: ConnexOntario Health Services Information is a not-for-profit corporation funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. ConnexOntario operates the Drug and Alcohol Registry of Treatment(DART), the Ontario Problem Gamling Helpline(OPGH), and Mental Health Service Information Ontario(MHSIO).
