We do this through programs such as counselling, information provision, social support activities and programs that help people with HIV return to work.

Description: Since 1983 ACT (AIDS Committee of Toronto) has developed programs and services that respond to the changing needs of the communities it serves. ACT provides support services that empower men, women and youth living with HIV to achieve self-determination, informed decision-making, independence, and overall well-being. ACT – Counselling for people with HIV

Group Name: ACT – Counselling for people with HIV

Description: Since 1983 ACT (AIDS Committee of Toronto) has developed programs and services that respond to the changing needs of the communities it serves. ACT provides support services that empower men, women and youth living with HIV to achieve self-determination, informed decision-making, independence, and overall well-being. We do this through programs such as counselling, information provision, social support activities and programs that help people with HIV return to work.

We provide free, confidential counselling to anyone who is living with HIV. Counsellors will meet with you at ACT, over the phone, or in other locations, such as coffee shops. There is no need to give a real name if anonymity or confidentiality is a concern. Couples counselling, grief/bereavement counselling, and counselling for a partner of someone with HIV, are all available. To book an appointment call or drop by ACT: a counsellor is available – without an appointment – on a first come first serve basis, Monday – Friday.

ACT – Buddy Program for Persons who are HIV positive

Description: Since 1983 ACT (AIDS Committee of Toronto) has developed programs and services that respond to the changing needs of the communities it serves. ACT provides support services that empower men, women and youth living with HIV to achieve self-determination, informed decision-making, independence, and overall well-being. We do this through programs such as counselling, information provision, social support activities and programs that help people with HIV return to work.

This program matches people living with HIV with a trained volunteer that can provide confidential friendly support. A buddy can meet with you at ACT, in your home, or at other locations (for example at a coffee shop. For more information or to register for a buddy call.

Group Name: 2-Spirited People of the 1st Nations

Description: 2-Spirited People of the 1st Nations is a non-profit social services organization whose membership consists of Aboriginal gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people in Toronto. Due to the AIDS epidemic, the organization was prompted to have health, counseling and advocacy expertise.

The Teresa Group – New Mom’s Group

Group Name: The Teresa Group – New Mom’s Group

Description: The Teresa Group is a community-based charitable organization specifically serving children affected by HIV and AIDS and their families.

Since 1990 The Teresa Group has evolved from providing support to a handful of children and families to an organization with a dedicated team of professional staff providing a broad range of compassionate front line services to hundreds of local children and families affected by HIV and AIDS. The Teresa Group also coordinates a Provincial program to distribute infant formula to new moms living with HIV and is a founding member and fiscal agent for the global Coalition on Children Affected by AIDS. The Teresa Group and the Coalition co-organize an international symposium affiliated with each International AIDS Conference. The Teresa Group provides leadership through example, information, education and innovation.

New Mom’s Group provides a safe place for moms to connect with others who have a baby and who also live with HIV. The activities are designed to engage, teach and stimulate as new moms and their babies get to know one another in their first year together. Many topics are covered including nutrition, and age and stage of development, and there is always time for songs and stories. This group helps reduce the isolation many new mothers experience.

The Circle of Care Initiative is a collaborative approach to providing diverse, innovative and practical support services for women living with HIV or AIDS in Toronto. The Circle of Care Initiative was designed in response to women’s own stated needs and interests. Its goals are to stabilize, strengthen and expand programs for women affected by HIV and AIDS. Circle of Care is a consortium of five AIDS Service Organisations: AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT), Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention (Black CAP), Prisoners with HIV/AIDS Support Action Network (PASAN), Toronto People with AIDS Foundation (PWA) and The Teresa Group.

“Leading the Way” is a support group for children and youth living with or affected by HIV and AIDS. The groups are available to children/youth ages 5 – 18 and run for nine weeks each spring and fall. Children/youth have the chance to meet others in similar situations in a fun, safe and supportive environment.
