Description: A volunteer organization, part of a unique seniors’ project organized and run by trained senior volunteers. Senior peer helpers listen in a friendly manner to concerns and problems of other seniors. They help seniors recognize the value of their life experiences and how those experiences can help them cope today, encourage them to realize their strengths and help them build self-esteem and confidence. Seniors are referred, when necessary, to appropriate community resources. To help seniors consider new options for their lives.

When: Drop-in or telephone contacts, as well as an answering-machine service. Open 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Group Name: Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care – Adult Day Program

Description: Yee Hong is a caring community where seniors and others enjoy the highest quality of life. We raise the standard in long-term care and effect a positive impact on the global health care system by seeking to be the model of excellence in culturally appropriate geriatric care. We take pride in being a provider of choice and an employer of choice.

The Adult Day Program aims to provide structured and supervised activities for post-stroke and dementia patients and frail seniors in order to prevent social isolation and encourage independent living in the community. To offer social, recreational, physical and educational activities in order to maintain the optimal level of functioning and delay institutionalization, and to provide respite, support and information services for caregivers. Program includes:

  • Educational, physical, recreational and social activities
  • Assistance with activities of daily living
  • Individual/group supportive counselling
  • Snacks and hot lunch
  • Foot care service
  • Caregiver support program

Referrals are welcome from medical professionals, social workers, family members, friends or clients themselves. Personal interview is required to determine eligibility. Application for the Mississauga Day Program should go through the Community Care Access Centres.

When: Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.**$22 per day for the Scarborough Day Programs. $20 per day for the Mississauga Day Programs. Additional charges for transportation, outings, special events and extended care.
