Description: Catholic Community Services of York Region is a not for profit charitable, social services agency, delivering a comprehensive array of services to the whole community. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. We are an inclusive, multicultural organization embracing many faiths and languages. We are a registered charity and issue tax receipts for donations. CCSYR is a family services agency, accredited by both Family Service Ontario and Catholic Charities. We offer many types of counselling and group services to help people cope with personal and relationship challenges.

Bridge Group for Women: An eight session supportive group for women, led by experienced female counsellors. Topics include self-esteem, assertiveness building, dealing with anger, building stronger relationships, reducing isolation and coping constructively with transitions. This is an ongoing program and is offered three times each year. ***Registration in advance is required. Call the Intake Line or e-mail us. Child minding is sometimes available for these programs. Call to enquire or check the Schedule. Registration fee is $10.

York Region Abuse Program

Group Name: York Region Abuse Program

Description: The York Region Abuse Program provides individual and group therapy to children, adolescents and adults of all genders who are differently-abled and/or those from all social, economic, racialized, ethnic and religious backgrounds, as well as those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, two spirit and heterosexual who have experienced childhood sexual abuse.

They provide individual and group therapy to adult and adolescents who have experienced childhood sexual abuse; provide individual and group therapy for children aged 3-12 years who have been sexually abused, as well as offer psycho-educational support to their supportive caregivers; and provide individual support for children with sexualized behaviour problems who are under the age of 11 1/2, are prepubescent, and demonstrate sexual behavior that is developmentally inappropriate, intrusive or aggressive in nature.

Persons who inquire about individual or group therapy will be given information over the telephone or in person. If appropriate, an intake will be completed. Following intake, a face to face interview is required prior to admittance to service.

Canadian Mental Health Association – Support For Depression

Group Name: Canadian Mental Health Association – Support For Depression

Description: Support for Depression offers individuals who are experiencing or have experienced depression an opportunity to share experiences in a safe, non-judgemental atmosphere, so that they can support each other and develop coping skills. There is no set format: the group takes the conversation where it needs to go. In fact, at their first session, participants may just sit and listen if they so choose. The group facilitators are not mental health professionals; they are trained volunteers who have experienced depression and are at a point in their lives where they want to help others learn to cope with this illness.

Where: Canadian Mental Health Association | York Region, ON

When: Meetings are held weekly and are open to anyone who has experienced or is experiencing depression. There are no fees for service.

Tuesdays in Richmond Hill, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at M.L. McConaghy Seniors’ Centre, 10100 Yonge St., Room 204.

Thursdays in Newmarket, 10 a.m.- 12 noon at Church of the Nazarene, 79 Main St.

Thursdays in Markham, 7:30-9:30 p.m. at CMHA 3601 Hwy #7 East, Suite 710 (HSBC Tower).

Group Name: AIDS Committee of York Region

Description: Since 1993, ACYR has been working to improve the quality of life in York Region by raising awareness through community education, and by providing support and access to dignified care for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. All their services are free of charge, confidential, and anonymous. They provide support, education, and access to dignified care for those affected by HIV/AIDS in York Region.
